Clinical significance of the level of serum thyroxin in cirrhosis patients with type C hepatic encephalopathy
Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To analyze the level of serum thyroxin in type C hepatic encephalopathy(HE) patients and its clinical significance.
METHODS: In this study,180 patients with liver cirrhosis were divided into two groups: HE group (n = 60) and non-HE group (n = 120),The HE cases were classified into period Ⅰ,Ⅱ,ⅢandⅣ. The levels of serum thyroxin(T4,T3,FT4,FT3 and TSH) were determined by radioimmunoassay.
RESULTS: The level of serum thyroxin (T4,T3,FT4 and FT3) gradually decreased along with deterioration of liver cirrhosis while the level of TSH increased. The levels of serum thyroxin were significantly different between HE and non-HE [ TSH (13.65±3.12) μU/ml vs (9.26±1.86) μU/mL,P<0.01;T3 (0.87±0.12) nmol/L) vs (1.21±0.33) nmol/L,P<0.01], even in the same stage of Child-Pugh.levels of serum thyroxin were also different among different periods in HE (particularly Ⅲ and Ⅳ vs ⅠandⅡ) patients.
CONCLUSIONS: The disorder of thyroxin levels may be a significant factor which can affect the development of HE,and it can also be one of the important factors that influence the prognosis of HE.
